I believe there are three parts to a photographer. The first is his hands -- how fast is his trigger finger. Does he catch an incredibly fleeting expression while it is still traveling across a face, or does he have to pose people to get shots?

The second part of a photographer is his eye. Does he see like a designer, finding what's cool or surprising or elegant in life as it unfolds -- or after the moment is gone?

In my view the third, and most important part of a photographer is his mind or heart. Does he think from his own reference point as an artist, or does he try to place himself inside your head, or your company's mindset, or the viewer's sensibilities, as he shoots? There's nothing intrinsically wrong with a photographer who works as a creative artist. Some of the best work in the world is done by these kinds of photographers. But as a buyer of photography you need to be aware of the difference between a photographic artist and a commercial or "hired" photographer. One sees his own vision primarily, and he primarily works for his own artistic satisfaction. The other sees what you ask him to look for, and visually tells the story that you need to tell.

I am decidedly that kind of photographer.... the kind that tries very hard to respond professionally to your vision and your goals as the client. Whether we're shooting a wedding or a product or an executive portrait or an abstract idea, I believe you can count on me to internalize your communication objective in every shot I frame.

I might be a professional, but you are the one whose taste matters.

I hope you like the examples contained in these galleries. I selected these images to show that I love people, and enjoy capturing expressions and communicating the character of each person.

WEDDINGS -- I love weddings, and want to pour my freshest personality and skill into every one. If weddings were my primary business, I am certain they would start to feel routine. But doing only a few a month keeps them on a pedestal where they belong. I love photographing people who are looking their best, united with their families, and heartily engaged in making memories for a lifetime. I also love the dynamics of pleasing so many people, and having to create great compositions and interesting, fresh perspectives in limited time, on a tight budget. It's a great professional challenge and I am so glad to have discovered how much fun they can be in the last 5 years.

COMMERCIAL PHOTOGRAPHY -- For many years I have focused my lens on the world of business: people and products, organizations and their clients. I love to illustrate what's happening behind the scenes, to find the visual poetry in a mundane manufacturing scene. You'll notice a facility with both available and artificial light. I hope you'll also see when you look at entire assignment galleries that I can combine many of the skills of an art director in my photographic duties ... so that you end up with a variety of interpretations and layout choices to illustrate each photographic idea.

NATURE, ECOLOGY -- Nature inspires me with its understated beauty, and its hidden symmetries. In the 20 years we spent living on a farm, the rhythms of the days and seasons taught me to look for great visuals in unexpected places. I am passionate about sustainable agriculture, the soil, compost toilets, water conservation and soil replenishment. I'm also passionate about the need for renewable energy and the need for drastic rethinking of the infrastructure of civilization. All of these concerns inform my ability to serve energy, ecology, and agricultural sectors with rich and emotional photography.

PEOPLE -- People being people are the richest source of photographic opportunity, because there's a story in every knowing glance, every aha moment. Because I love people and being around people, you can count on me to produce portraits that reveal what's behind the bright eyes of every person I see.

URBAN TEXTURES -- My interest in visual design draws me to cityscapes and the people who interact with them. All of these visual interests allow me to enjoy classic architectural assignments, or gritty photos of a post-modern urban vibe, or found moments that illustrate a profound idea. I llike to communicate abstract concepts through the repetition and juxtaposition of invigorating forms and colors, found in every city today. My new home in Seattle presents countless opportunities to explore these sensibilities.

DYNAMICS -- Perhaps because my career has spanned the transition from still image audio-visuals to video and film, I have also always been fascinated by the interplay of motion with static forms. Motion blur, repetitive motion, stroboscopic motion, timelapse ... you'll see that theme in many photos across all the galleries.

My most recent work is taking me into the realm of High Dynamic Range, Timelapse, and Panoramic images.

Thank you for visiting my site!
